Coding with The Artist

Learn how to create art using code by creating shapes and designs!

Start by completing this course which will teach you how it works: https://studio.code.org/s/artist/stage/1/puzzle/1

After you’re done the course, up at the top of the screen next to your username, click Create

Choose Artist

Have fun and create something really impressive! Again, you’ll get two marks, one for how well you use the possibilities (use different commands, loops, variables, etc.) and one for making something that looks amazing.

You should have a lot of code to show off. Please make it look like you spent a lot of time creating your art. If it’s really simple, your mark will not be great. Take your time!

At some point, you need to Rename your file to match the content

You can just use the title of the assignment if you like:

When you’re SURE that you’ve done a great job, you will need to Share a Link

Make sure you press Save

At the top of the screen, click Share

You’ll need to click on the link to highlight it (it’ll turn blue)

Then you need to COPY (press Ctrl and C) or right click and choose Copy

Once you have the link copied, go back to Teams and click on the Assignment

You will need to Add work:

And this time you are handing in a Link

Paste in the address that you copied:

And give your link a name (copy me if you like):

Press Turn In (or Turn In Late) when you are done!

You will also need to provide a bit of a Reflection by attaching a document in Teams explaining:

What you learned and a bit about what you did to create your art.
Tell me what you like about your work/the assignment
Tell me what you had trouble with or wish you could have done differently

Attach a document with the answers to those questions in Teams for full marks.

712 Coding Review

By now you all should have some experience with computer coding through my annual Hour of Code, so this will come as a review for most, but may be an introduction for a few.

There are a lot of fun things we can do by coding, and I hope to explore a lot of them this year, including creating some neat artwork and artistic creations.

But first, let’s go back and make sure that we all complete the basic Hour of Code introduction.

Start HERE

If you already have a previous Code.org account, you can SIGN IN HERE

If you don’t have an account, you will need to create one.

  • You can choose your own (appropriate) display name.
  • I recommend using your @sjasd.ca email account, which will make it super easy to get back in if you ever get locked out.
  • I also recommend that you use the SAME PASSWORD as your computer, which is easy to remember or look up.

Once you are part of our class, I can see your progress and can give you a mark for completing, and then I’ll know when it’s time to move on to more interesting projects.

Fun & Easy Digital Art at ABCYa

We’ll start off our Digital Art journey with something fun and easy, which will allow you to be creative and come up with something really interesting and unique.

*** Please MUTE your sound! There are some sound effects that will get mighty annoying if everyone has their sound on. Please. Thank you. ***

Press the “Play” triangle to begin

You’ll see your tools along the bottom of the screen. Click the little disclosure triangle to see all of the available tools:

Pick a tool. Many brushes will have a size option:

and a colour palette:

If you make a mistake, there is an Undo and a Redo button

You can even import a picture to decorate:

Consider decorating THIS PHOTO OF OUR SCHOOL

You will need to DOWNLOAD that photo (or another one) if you want to Import it to your Background

Take your time and try to come up with something interesting that shows some effort and creativity. You will attach this to the assignment in Teams.

When you are done, SAVE your work and attach it in Teams.

Teams Assignments

Occasionally you will see Assignments appear in your class Teams. There’s a bit of a trick to handing in your work because you will need to upload or create a file.

A new assignment will show up in the class General channel or you can click on Assignments. It will look something like this:

Once you click View assignment to look at it, you should (duh) read the instructions for the assignment. Different teachers and different assignments will require different uploads, but I’ll show you an easy way to do this if you just have to answer questions.

First, click Add work:

There are 4 ways to attach your work.

You may already have a file created in OneDrive. If you create a file in Word or PowerPoint or whatever and you save it or upload it into your OneDrive, you should see it listed:

If you’ve created a file on your computer or device and HAVE NOT uploaded it to OneDrive, you will nead to Upload from this device (near the bottom of the page):

Find the file and attach it. Remember that your file should have a FILE NAME that tells your teacher what you’re uploading. If you don’t name your file, I MIGHT NOT OPEN IT. Your file name should reflect the name or subject of the assignment.

If you don’t have a file yet, you will need to add a New File:

You can choose beteween common Microsoft Office file types. If you’re just answering questions, you’ll want a Word document

Again, make sure you add a File name that reflects the title of the assignment or its content. My first question asks what your favourite food it, so let’s just call this one Food Assignment:

Once you create the file, it will automatically be attached, but you still need to open it to add your answers. Under My work, click on the file you just created to open it:

Inside of that document, provide your answer(s)

Once you’re done, press Close

I always recommend READING THE INSTRUCTIONS AGAIN to make sure that you’ve answered correctly and completely.

Once you have READ THE INSTRUCTIONS AGAIN and you’re sure that you’ve done your work correctly and completely, you can send it to your teacher by pressing Turn in:

You will see that it’s Turned in. If for some reason you want to change your work, maybe because you forgot to READ THE INSTRUCTIONS AGAIN, you can Undo turn in to work on it some more:

Once your teacher has looked at your work, you will get a notification that your work has been returned:

You should look at the file or the comments to see if your teacher has any suggestions for improvement. If you need to and are able to hand in your work again, you should fix it and Turn in again.

If you don’t need to improve your work, you DO NOT NEED TO TURN IN AGAIN!
