Lyric Analysis: Simile/Metaphor

Similes and metaphors are pretty much everywhere in popular songs. We’ll look at some examples together, then you can go through some and see if you can spot them. MOST (not all) of these songs have both.

Freewriting!

The hardest part of writing is getting started. You usually spend a lot of time figuring out what you’re going to say before you start. But sometimes, you just need to force yourself (or, in this case, be forced by your teacher…) to start writing anything and everything and figure out what you really wanted to say afterward.

Your task at the beginning of class today is to write freely without worrying about anything. The only rule is that you can’t stop writing. Write ANYTHING. Correct NOTHING. If it’s messy or spelled wrong, who cares. If it doesn’t make sense or sounds weird, who cares!

I DO NOT NEED TO READ THIS, but I do want to see that you’ve written something. If you have to write the same thing over and over again (NO COPYING AND PASTING!), go for it. If you write a bunch of nonsense, so long as it’s words, go ahead.

Here are some questions that you COULD write about if you want to. If not, write about your weekend, your dog, what you want for lunch, why you hate doing this, why Mr. Robson stinks, WHATEVER! No judgement, no wrong answers, just WRITING!

What would you do if your friends went missing?

You’re just a kid, what could you do?

What would it really take to bring them back?

Underground to Canada Freeze Frame

A freeze frame is a frozen scene from the novel. Basically, you and your group will act out a scene from the novel but most of the time you will not be moving.

At the start of your scene, you will be frozen in time. The rest of us will try to guess what is happening. You will stay frozen for exactly 10 seconds.

Then you wil move and act out 10 seconds with NO TALKING.

Then you will freeze your scene again for another 10 seconds.

You will have to go through the book and pick a scene that is significant to the story. Sorry, no “sleeping” scene… You need to find the chapter and page # and explain why you think this scene is important.

NOTE: ONLY ONE GROUP PER SCENE! Tell Mr. Robson right away when you decide on a scene before someone else takes it.

Each person in your group must have a role in the scene, but not everyone needs to play a person. You’ll need to give me a list of the people in your group and their roles before you present. You may include extra props if you wish, but it shouldn’t be necessary.

I’m hoping to present these on Friday morning, periods 1 & 2.

Choose your group and your scene WISELY!

You will need to hand in a document with all of the following information:

  • chapter
  • page #
  • description of the scene in the book
  • why is the scene important to the story?
  • a list of all of the people in your scene and their roles
  • any props you’ll need/include

Jeb Brown’s Cabin

Examine chapters 14 and 15 for details describing Jeb Brown’s cabin. Draw 2 views of the cabin based on specific details provided in the novel.  Include a minimum of 10 details between both pictures (those details come directly from the book!)  Label all relevant details and make sure to show where the girls were hiding.

Draw an outside/front view.

Also draw an inside/bird’s eye view.

Chapter 10/11 – Underground to Canada

For this chapter, your job is simple:

1) Write a detailed summary of the two chapters. What happens, who’s involved, where/when is the action taking place, etc.

2) Find AT LEAST 3 unfamiliar words in the chapters. Find ones that you’re not entirely sure what they mean. Keep track of what/where they are. After reading, look the words up and rewrite the sentences from the book with new words in place of the unfamiliar ones.

3) What would you say the theme/title of these chapters should be? What do they have in common?

4) Make a personal connection to the chapters. Have you ever been in a situation anything like the ones in this chapter? Have you ever felt the same way? Have you ever felt like you were being chased, watched, or in imminent danger? Write a few sentences connecting something or someone in the chapters to your life, or you could explain how you/your life/someone you know is nothing like the chapters and why.

Chapter 5/6

As we read chapters 5-6, please do the same things that we did for earlier chapters, and keep track of the following:

As with the first two chapters, as we read I want you to make notes and afterward, write:

a. Observations: What do you know? Find details from the book that describe each person or place.

b. Critical Thinking: What do you think? Give me your own thoughts & opinions about each.

c. Extending Understanding: What do you wonder? What kind of questions do you have about or for each person or place? What else would you like to know? What don’t you understand? What other information would you like to have?

This time, we’ll add:

d. How do you feel? Write out your personal feelings/reactions to the people and situations discussed in the chapter.

You’ll use these notes to create your own questions AND answers for these chapters.

Write AT LEAST two questions about these chapters. You may wish to do more than 3 to make sure that you get full marks. These should be questions that require proof from the book and some personal insights. Do not ask questions that can be easily answered from the book, they should have a personal connection/insight as well.

You also need to ANSWER your questions in detail. The answers will need references to the book as well as your own insights. These will resemble the answers that we did together for the previous chapters. Look back at those here.

You will also COMPARE and CONTRAST the Henson and Riley plantations. This kind of exercise often takes the form of a Venn Diagram, but you may just create a table with 3 columns that looks kind of like this:

Henson Plantation BOTH Riley Plantation
